CUPPING THERAPY
What is cupping therapy?
Cupping is a therapy that has been helping people deal with pain for thousands of
years. Wendy places a cup on your back, stomach, arms or legs, and the vacuum
formed by the cup draws fluid into the treated area, breaking capillaries under the skin.
Your body sees this as an injury and directs more blood to the area to set the natural
healing process in action.
Cupping treats a variety of issues, including arthritis; back, neck and knee pain;
breathing problems; carpal tunnel syndrome; gastrointestinal problems; migraines; and
high blood pressure.
The history of cupping is vague, though it apparently was common in several
civilizations. In China, it was used in surgery and later as a separate therapy, while the
Egyptians considered it to be helpful for fever, pain, vertigo, menstruation imbalances,
weakened appetite and accelerating the “healing crisis” of disease. In Greece,
Hippocrates apparently used cupping to treat internal disease. More recently, European
and American physicians used cupping in the 17th and 18th centuries. At one point,
breast cupping became popular to treat inflamed breasts and lactation dysfunctions.
The original “cups” might have been hollowed out animal horns that were used to drain
toxins from snakebites and skin lesions. They evolved into bamboo cups that eventually
were replaced by glass.
Vacuum cupping therapy is an incredibly versatile, modern style of cupping therapy.
The basic movements can easily be customized to accomplish a wide variety of
techniques, from lymphatic drainage to deep tissue release. This complements many
health modalities, ranging from spa treatments and medical massage to chiropractic,
physical and occupational therapies. By creating suction and negative pressure,
Vacuum cupping therapy is used to soften tight muscles, loosen adhesions, lift
connective tissue, bring hydration and blood flow to body tissues and drain excess fluids
and toxins by opening lymphatic pathways. Vacuum cupping body work is versatile and
can easily be modified to accomplish a range of techniques, from lymphatic drainage to
deep tissue and fascial release.
CUPPING THERAPY FAQ
Vacuum Cupping • Frequently Asked Questions1. What is vacuum cupping?
It is a modern take on Chinese cupping that uses subtle power suction and vacuum pressure to bring hydration, interstitial fluid and blood flow to a specific area with muscle tension. The cups lift adhesions, loosen connective tissue and move deep inflammation to the skin.
2. What does vacuum cupping help?
Cupping can take the place of a deep tissue massage without the pain and discomfort of the massage therapist drilling into the muscle tissue. It mimics deep tissue massage, with a long strokes or circle motion. This softens the tissue rigidness and breaks up stubborn knots and discomfort in the area being worked on.
3. What is the benefit of vacuum cupping?
Vacuum cupping increases blood flow to the muscles and nourishes the skin, helps move toxins out of the tissue and is calming to nervous system.
4. Will vacuum cupping leave marks on my skin?
The skin will turn red. You may have some streaks or circles on the area being worked on for a few days because cupping brings deep inflammation to the surface of the skin, loosening adhesions between the layers of tissue and eliminating stagnate fluid that has been trapped in the area.
5. How long is a session?
A session generally lasts one hour.
